The original objective was to produce the required 400 units necessary to comply with the FIA homologation standards for participation in both Group 4 and Group 5 racing. During its design and development stages, there were two diametrically opposed views within the Porsche organization as to how to market the upcoming 911 “Turbo” model. One camp wanted a focused, motorsports-based, minimalist package with reduced weight realized through the deletion of sound deadening, air conditioning, interior carpet, rear seats and the glovebox. The other camp was adamant in creating a luxury high-performance Turbo model that would be the flagship of the Porsche 911 model lineup; their vision was a Porsche Turbo with an extensive array of luxury amenities including a leather interior, air conditioning, power windows, power mirrors, electric sliding sunroof, headlight washers and a premium sound system. The decision to produce the luxury Turbo proved to be the wise choice with demand for the car far exceeding the supply, thereby necessitating Porsche to produce the car in numbers far in excess of the original goal of 400 units.
