The car has undergone a nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration to concours standards and retains its original sheet metal and numbers-matching drivetrain: an L78 400 CI V-8 that rests between the frame rails, which came from the factory rated at 250 HP and 325 lb-ft of torque, breathing through a Quadrajet carb and exhaling with Gardner exhaust. Motivation is funneled through the optional Muncie M22 “Rock Crusher” 4-speed manual gearbox, the 3.42:1 geared differential and onward to the Rally II wheels wrapped in Goodyear Polyglas F70-14 tires. Power-assisted disc brakes up front and drums in back slow the 400, while power steering makes navigating the drive-in an effortless task. With 21 factory options on the copy of the factory build sheet, the Formula bears the rare factory side stripe with opening for the Formula 400 callouts, concealed wipers and a rear decklid spoiler.
Inside, front occupants receive black “161” bucket seats separated by a full-length center console, while the driver gets a tilt steering column topped with a Formula steering wheel. Gears are rowed via a Hurst floor-mounted shifter, and an AM/FM radio pumps out plenty of cruising tunes. A set of PHS documents also accompanies this fabulous Formula 400.
