With the Drag Pak, the 428 was upgraded into a Super Cobra Jet with heavy-duty rods, unique balancing and an external oil cooler. As a Ram-Air model, the Cougar’s hood is equipped with a functional scoop and hood pins. The drivetrain and interior are original to the car, which has seen one repaint in the original Medium Lime Metallic paint. In addition to its high-performance 428 SCJ package, the Cougar is also equipped with Mercury luxury, including the black bucket-seat interior with Décor Group, console, AM and 8-track radio, electric clock, courtesy lights, power ventilation, power front disc brakes, tinted glass and Cougar-styled steel wheels with Goodyear “no-size” white-letter Polyglas tires. This SCJ Cougar is well detailed, right down to the 428 Cobra Jet with finned-aluminum valve covers and engine compartment with correct markings and factory decals. The shifter has been updated to a more precise Hurst T-handle version. Compared to Ford’s Mach 1 Mustang, the Cobra Jet Cougar was a luxury sleeper, with no CJ identification other than the R-code’s hood scoop.
