An “R” in the fifth digit of the Mustang’s VIN indicates it was built with the optional 428/335 HP Cobra Jet V-8 with ram air, though the CJ is now topped with an oval finned air cleaner like those found on Carroll Shelby’s Mustangs. A matching pair of finned Cobra valve covers is fitted to the cylinder heads, while an MSD ignition helps light the fire in the cylinders. Backing the Cobra Jet is one of Ford’s stout C6 3-speed automatic transmissions. The suspension on the Mach 1 used many of the same components found on the Mustang GT, including heavy-duty springs and shocks and a thicker front sway bar. This car was also equipped with the optional power steering and power front disc brakes.
The Comfortweave high-back bucket seats and rim-blow steering wheel inside this Mustang were part of the 1969 Mach 1 package. It also has the optional factory air conditioning, and an Alpine AM/FM/CD player is a more contemporary addition. One of several new models offered for the redesigned Mustang in 1969, the Mach 1 was an instant success.
