The Z28 was a driver’s car, one that eschewed the big-block engines, automatic transmissions and such luxuries as air conditioning found in other muscle car fare. In contrast to the various big-block monsters that developed their power down low, the Z28’s powerplant was a high-compression 302 CI screamer that was happiest at its 6,500 RPM redline. That was just part of the total package that included a required 4-speed manual transmission, 12-bolt Positraction differential, heavy-duty front and rear suspension, heavy-duty cooling system and temperature-controlled fan, quick steering, front disc brakes, dual exhaust and E70-15 tires on Rally wheels. To the serious driver, the Z28 needed few, if any, of the available optional extras, an approach taken by the original owner of this purposeful example.
