The Mustang Cobra Jets soon became favorites of motorheads all across the country. Whether on the local drag strip, racing in national competitions, or going from stoplight to stoplight for pinks, a Cobra Jet under the hood of a Mustang was a fearsome competitor to be taken seriously. In February 1968, Al Joniec won the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, California, in his Rice-Holman Super Stock Mustang Cobra Jet, establishing its reputation for success. At the heart of the success of the Cobra Jet were 427-style heads, a 390 GT cam, an iron-cast take on the Ford aluminum Police Interceptor intake, a 735 CFM Holley carburetor and a ram air system. By the time the engine reached production in April, it was purposely underrated on horsepower to snooker both insurers and NHRA officials—and benefit lucky owners of these very special machines.
