This new feature heralded the addition of two new 427 CI engines at the top of the powertrain pecking order, both topped with a chromed triangular air cleaner hiding a special aluminum intake manifold with three inline Holley 2-barrel carburetors. Officially named tri-power, the system used a vacuum signal drawn from the center carburetor’s venturi to activate the two end carburetors in progressive fashion, resulting in scorching acceleration as the effective flow rate increased from the center carb’s 350 CFM to more than 1,200 CFM at 4,000 RPM. Chevrolet offered two versions of the tri-power big-block V-8: the 435 HP L71 and the L68 powering this 1967 coupe to the tune of 400 HP at 5,400 RPM and 460 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 RPM. Meticulously restored in frame-off fashion to the highest standards, the matching-numbers L68 big-block V-8 powering this 1967 Sting Ray coupe is part of a special-order package—reportedly ordered by a General Motors executive as a Christmas present for his wife—that included a Powerglide 2-speed automatic transmission, G81 Positraction rear end with 3.70:1 gearing and factory air conditioning.
