Description

Matching numbers 289 CI engine
Automatic transmission and drivetrain
Original carburetor and fuel pump
Original body panels
Refurbished or NOS nuts, bolts, and fasteners
Refinished in original Raven Black with Hertz Gold stripes and Black interior
The Shelby GT350 was only in its second year of production when Shelby American sales manager Peyton Kramer approached Hertz with the idea of adding high-performance Shelby Mustangs to its rental fleet for the Hertz Sports Car Club. Hoping to sell 100 or so, Shelby American was pleasantly surprised when the eventual order nearly doubled 1966 Shelby production. This 1966 Hertz Shelby was built at Shelby American’s Los Angeles facility with all the special GT350 equipment—fiberglass hood with scoop, rear quarter panel brake-cooling scoops, chrome Magnum 500 wheels, Plexiglass C-pillar windows, wood steering wheel, competition seat belts and a dash-mounted tachometer. Shelby also enhanced handling with Koni shocks and traction bars, plus an export brace and Monte Carlo bar in the engine compartment to strengthen the front end. Power was supplied by the solid-lifter 289 High Performance with Shelby American’s 306 HP Cobra modifications: aluminum intake topped by an Autolite 4-barrel carburetor for automatics, Cobra finned aluminum valve covers and Tri-Y headers.
