Initially rated at 335 HP, its OEM 390 CI FE-series V-8 now churns out a little more muscle, not to mention volume, thanks to the addition of a Flowmaster exhaust system. Bolted up behind this Thunderbird Special big-block is Ford’s Sports Shift C6 automatic transmission, which put the “A” in GTA in 1966 (a manual transmission was standard for the Fairlane GT.) The Sports Shift label refers to the three-speed C6’s split personality: it can operate in typical auto mode or be manually controlled via a snazzy chrome T-handle. Per standard 1966 GTA specs, that handle is housed in a brightly trimmed console flanked by bucket seats. Also included in 1966’s GT/GTA package were appropriate badges inside and out, non-functional hood louvers, lower body racing stripes, chrome dress-up beneath the hood and a heavy-duty suspension underneath. Popular options included styled steel wheels, a vinyl roof and a Sports steering wheel featuring a simulated-wood rim. Even without the GT touch, Ford’s notably restyled midsize vehicle made headlines in 1966, with “Motor Trend” claiming that its truly fresh fastback shell “put Fairlane into a class it’s never seen before.” Two other 390 CI V-8s were available that year in Fairlane 500 and 500XL models, one rated at 270 HP and the other at 315 HP. Exclusive to the GT/GTA duo, the 390/335 HP received its power boost from a high-lift cam and a bigger Holley 4-barrel carburetor.
