Putting the L79 mill into a Nova SS turned a car that looked like Grandma’s grocery getter into a sleeper Hot Rod, its 360 lb-ft of torque easily capable of overwhelming those skinny 6.95-14 bias-ply tires. The L79 in this Nova SS is a matching-numbers engine with a June 1966 date code. It has been rebuilt to factory specifications using an NOS GM camshaft, and it exhales through a new dual-exhaust system. Behind the small-block is a Muncie M20 wide-ratio 4-speed manual transmission with the factory shifter, and the BQ-code 12-bolt Positraction rearend is filled with 3.31 gears. The Nova’s undercarriage received as much attention as its bright red sheetmetal. The heavy-duty front and rear suspension components were refurbished, the front disc brakes were upgraded (and are now fed by a new dual master cylinder and new stainless lines), and a new fuel tank and fuel lines were installed. Goodyear 6.95-14 tires with 1-inch whitewalls are mounted to steel wheels dressed with factory full-size hubcaps.
Inside the car are the original bucket seats, covered in Code 795 black vinyl, and a center console. The carpet is fresh, as is the glass. A big Sun tachometer mounted on the steering column keeps tabs on the engine’s speed, while a Delco pushbutton AM radio provides whatever soundtrack may be needed beyond the growl of the ‘Vette mill.
