The Rochester fuel-injected small-block engines at the top of the Corvette engine range were things of the past, supplanted in 1965 by the L78 396/425 HP big-block V-8 powerplant. Zora Arkus-Duntov boosted displacement for 1966 to 427 CI, jokingly explaining to one motoring scribe that the increase in displacement shaved considerable weight off the big-block’s cast-iron block. Two versions of the 427 were offered in the 1966 Corvette. The L36 employed a 2-bolt-main block, cast-aluminum 10.25:1 pistons, a hydraulic camshaft, cast-iron intake manifold and Holley 4-barrel. At 390 HP at 5,200 RPM and 460 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 RPM, the L36 was still more powerful than the old “Fuelie” small-block that sat atop the 1963-64 Corvettes.
