The L79 was essentially the same engine as the L76, sharing the same 11.0:1 compression, forged-aluminum pistons, forged-steel crank and rods, high-flow heads, aluminum intake and Holley 4-barrel carburetor. The difference was in the camshaft, a new hydraulic-lifter grind that gave stunning performance while eliminating the need for regular tuning. Available only with a 4-speed manual transmission, the L79 delivered 350 HP at 5,800 RPM with a 6,000 RPM redline and 360 lb-ft of torque at just 3,600 RPM.
