For early 1960s Ford performance-car lovers, the high-revving 289 High Performance in a lightweight midsize body was the hot-ticket for quick acceleration and high-speed thrills. As a K-code, the base 289 small-block was upgraded with a solid-lifter camshaft, 10.5:1 compression, 595 CFM 4-barrel carburetor, dual-point distributor, high-flow exhaust manifolds, chrome valve covers and open-element air cleaner. For the Fairlane, the Hi-Po option also triggered additional mandatory equipment, including Ford’s toughest 9-inch rear end, heavy-duty springs and shocks, higher-capacity radiator, sturdier transmission output shaft and a heavy-duty clutch. The only external clues to the high-performance potential are the small “High Performance” plates inserted behind the 289 emblems on the front fenders, although the bench seat belies the Fairlane’s underhood muscle with a 4-speed shifter and column-mounted Stewart Warner tachometer providing hints to the true muscle-car character.
