The first step in the car’s transformation was the substitution of the original frame with a custom-fabricated SRIII tube chassis designed, engineered and built to accept modern Corvette drivetrain and underpinnings. C5 front suspension pieces, including power rack-and-pinion steering and sway bar, are used in combination with Stage 2 C4 rear components along with tubular adjustable strut rods. Coilover shock absorbers and power disc brakes with stainless lines are used at all four corners.
In 1960, the most powerful engine offered in a Corvette was the 283/290 HP Fuelie small-block V-8, but the passing years have brought an entire new generation of Corvette pushrod V-8 engines. In this case, it’s the all aluminum 5.7L/345 HP LS1 introduced in the 1997 C5 Corvette, here mated to a 4L60E 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and backed by a Dana 36 rear differential.
Cosmetically, the car’s shimmering silver metallic paint and red leather interior are a time-honored combination, the look beautifully complemented with BF Goodrich blackwall tires fitted to highly polished custom billet aluminum wheels that faithfully replicate the original spinner wheel covers. Meanwhile, a number of subtle custom touches were applied to the interior. Custom red leather covers the seats, steering wheel, dash and door panels, accented with a silver-painted instrument cluster and console. Dakota Digital gauges, an Ididit tilt steering column, power windows, Vintage Air and a custom stereo complete the interior upgrades. The overall result is a thoroughly modernized performer that maintains the look, feel and, most importantly, the experience of driving the original first-generation Corvette.
