Although it was referred to as a Roadster, the 190SL was far more sophisticated than its British rivals and was fitted with such amenities as wind-up side windows, high-quality leather seats with multi-adjustability and the choice of an optional hardtop and a premium sound system, such as the Becker Europa AM/FM radio fitted in this car. The 190SL shared a common design language with its big brother 300SL, and both featured a front suspension of double-wishbone design and a swing-axle rear suspension arrangement. However, beyond these common denominators, they were markedly different cars. Whereas the 300SL was a high-speed sports car, the 190SL was personal luxury two-seater aimed at grand touring at a much lower terminal velocity speed. It is powered by a 1900cc inline 4-cylinder engine fitted with twin 2-barrel side-draft carburetors producing 120 HP and mated to an all synchromesh 4-speed manual transmission.
