Powered by a rebuilt and balanced 1953 Mercury 255 CI flathead V-8 engine, NOS parts were used in the rebuild along with Offenhauser heads and dual Stromberg 97 carburetors. A 3-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels, and dual exhaust lends a wonderful burble that only a flathead can make. A 12-volt electrical system helps with reliability and serviceability. The red interior presents wonderfully, the gold-tone dashboard looking fabulously Art Deco, and a new handmade, black canvas convertible top locks out the elements. The original 1940 fender skirts are a rare sight and lend the Ford a high level of style, giving it an upscale, expensive look.
The Ford Deluxe was an upscale trim option, which created some confusion with customers as Ford also introduced the De Luxe Ford in 1938 to span the gap between Ford and the more expensive Lincolns. Interestingly, Edsel Ford would also introduce Mercury in 1938, a whole new division intended to do exactly that, while offering a higher level of performance and more modern, youthful and aggressive styling. In all, this created five singular divisions: Ford, De Luxe Ford, Mercury, Lincoln-Zephyr and Lincoln. After World War II, the divisions would be simplified into just Ford, Mercury and Lincoln, streamlining things for the time being. Meanwhile, the Deluxe option was Ford’s upscale trim, and it worked well. Many conservative customers who wanted more amenities and comforts but didn’t want the outgoing cachet and image a Lincoln exuded chose the Deluxe as a way of appeasing those interests. For those wanting a bit more, they opted for the De Luxe Ford, but most chose the Ford Deluxe, and it’s a safe bet that few are as well presented as this one.
